Spintronics aims at understanding the mechanisms by which to achieve control of the electron spin degree of freedom, both for technological and fundamental reasons. In this talk I will first review the historically important case of the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect in magnetic multilayers. Then, in the main body of the talk, I will discuss how the spin-orbit couplings in solid-state systems may be used to manipulate the electron spin by purely electrical means, which is relevant from the point of view of conventional electronics. I will concentrate on the so-called spin Hall effect and show how it can be interestingly described in terms of an effective non-Abelian gauge theory for the Boltzmann transport equation.
